Additional The Monkey Wrench Gang Information

Edward Abbey called The Monkey Wrench Gang a "comic extravaganza," which it is, although one with a clear, serious message: to protect the American wilderness from the forces of commercial enterprise. The story centers on George Hayduke, an ex-Green Beret and Vietnam vet, who returns to the Southwestern desert after the war to find his beloved canyons and rivers threatened by industrial development. On a whitewater rafting trip down the Colorado River, Hayduke joins forces with three others who share his indignation and want to do something about it: feminist saboteur and Bronx exile Bonnie Abzug, wilderness guide and outcast Mormon Seldom Seen Smith, and libertarian billboard torcher Doc Sarvis, M.D. Together they venture off to become eco-raiders, waging war on the strip miners, clear-cutters, and the highway, dam, and bridge builders who are turning their natural habitat into a wasteland. The misadventures of this motley group make for an uproarious blend of chaos, conflict, and comedy.

What Customers Say About The Monkey Wrench Gang:

It looked like it had been exposed to water, because the pages and cover were curled and wrinkled. It looked as though the damage happened prior to shipment because the box was in good condition. This is a fine book, but unfortunately it arrived damaged.

I ordered the book on a Friday night and it arrived on a Monday. The product was in excellent condition. The shipping time was incredibly fast.

It is extremely vulgar and not a book most tweens would enjoy. ScatOur family has enjoyed and appreciated reading Carl Hiaasen's books for young adults - Hoot, Flush and most recently SCAT. If you are a family looking for something to read after Scat, I wouldn't recommend The Monkey Wrench Gang. As an adult, I found humor in the book and the monkey wrench gangs tactics are mildly amusing. In Scat, one of Hiaasen's characters recommends The Monkey Wrench gang to a fourteen year old character. We decided to check it out after finishing Scat.

If you're a fan of the ramblings of Bret Easton Ellis or the visionary worlds of Chuck Palahniuk then stop right now and add this book to your shopping cart; you won't be dissapointed. Easily Edward Abbey's most brilliant of works. The Monkey Wrench Gang hits on all cylinders.

Pursued by their nemesis the (Mormon) Bishop of Blanding, Mike Love, they're a little like Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters with moral intent. The new paperback with an intro by historian Douglas Brinkley and a timeline of Abbey's life (which ended in 1989) demonstrates the relevance of this work for contemporary audiences. Even though Abbey is having fun here, the novel sizzles with his righteous indignation about the inroads of construction and exploitation on the desert wilderness.I loved his characters--nurse Bonnie Abbzug (a tribute to Bella)., surgeon Doc Sarvis, the many-wived Seldom Seen Smith, and deranged Vietnam vet George Hayduke. Last time I looked, the Glen Canyon Dam was standing, but Abbey would be pleased that there's still talk of tearing it down. This novel is a great companion to a Four Corners vacation. You can visit all the places that Edward Abbey's tale of eco-mayhem takes his characters and, if you're intrepid, get in some challenging hikes.
